THE British Limousin breed has taken first place in the British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) figures for the 11th year running.
It is not only the leading breed sire, but also the largest numerically, with 687,382 Limousin sired cattle issued with passports last year - 35 per cent of the market share.
Since the BCMS began to record births and movements 11 years ago, a total of 7.319 million Limousin-sired birth registrations have been recorded.
Pedigree registrations of bull and heifer calves totalled just under 19,584 - up 1,500 on 2005 and a record for the breed.
The Charolais is the second largest beef breed, with 332,098 passports issued, 17 per cent of the market share. Aberdeen Angus remained the most popular native breed, with 222,290 registered births, 16 per cent of the market share.
In the dairy herd, Holstein Friesian or Holstein Friesian crosses were the most popular, totalling 579,617 registrations.
