A man has been indefinitely detained under the Mental Health Act after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of a friend.

John Churchill, 50, of Englefield Green, Staines, pleaded guilty on the grounds of diminished responsibility at the Old Bailey on Monday to the manslaughter of divorced father-of-three John McKenna.

On March 27 last year, police found 50-year-old Mr McKenna's body at a flat in School Lane, Egham.

Mr McKenna, who had been friends with Churchill, was attacked in his home and found in the bath.

He died from a single stab wound to the back.

Surrey Police said Churchill waited several days before reporting the incident at Egham police station and confessing to the crime.

He was sentenced under the Mental Health Act to be detained indefinitely and will be under constant assessment.

Responding to the sentence, Detective Inspector Jo Sidaway said: "John Churchill's mental state posed a serious risk to the public and led him to harm a man who considered himself a friend.

"We hope this result goes some way to reassuring the family of the victim and the public that this dangerous man will no longer be in a position to harm anyone."
