MARCH heralds the 25th anniversary of the U3A in the UK. During that time the organisation has grown to have more than 620 local groups with a nationwide membership of 170,000.
Therefore, it is no surprise to learn that every day there is a U3A group of people sitting together somewhere, sharing common interests and enjoying the fellowship of participating and learning subjects of their choice. Some groups will be out walking, sharing their observations on the environment that they are exploring, while others might be painting, making music together, or enjoying any of the varied subjects available, and sharing their own store of knowledge and experience.
The University of the Third Age, to give it its full title, is open to all retired or semi-retired people and does not concern itself with qualifications or tests. Just to keep active in mind and body and to enjoy the experience of shared learning.
Of course, many members are inevitably single, and as a results of U3A membership, it gives them an opportunity to meet other singles who might otherwise be quite lonely, and many such meetings have led to lasting friendships.
