Manager Dave Garland's reshuffle paid off for Carshalton on Saturday when they bounced back following their humiliation at Walton & Hersham by beating visiting Leyton 2-0.

Leyton contributed to their own downfall by having two men sent off in the closing stages.

With David Graves reverting to central defence, the Robins had the edge and on-loan Jerome Maledon, restored to the midfield, enjoyed one of his more effective games in a Carshalton shirt.

Rob Haworth missed a sitter for the Robins in the 26th minute, but they took the lead from their next attack. Mark Marshall's cross found Charlie Side, who cut inside his marker before scoring with a crisp, low shot past Jamie Lunan.

Haworth's flicked header skimmed the top of the crossbar before a crucial interception by Maledon resulted in Carsahlton making it 2-0 on 68 minutes. Marshall controlled a dropping ball and sent a sweet left foot drive into the gap between the Leyton keeper and the near post.

Mark Sophocleous almost reduced the arrears with an effort that struck the bar. Shortly after Leyton hit the self-destruct button when Vas Souteriou was dismissed for a push on Toppin as a melee broke out. Toppin was fortunate to escape a second caution for his unnecessary contribution to the incident.

Then in the closing minutes Sophocleous received his marching orders after his continued dissent had brought him a second card.

Carshalton: Howe, Cooper, Harwood, Graves, Cartledge, Maledon, Marshall, Toppin, Fontana, Haworth (Hamici), Side (Watts). Sub unused: Rayner.

This Saturday Carshalton visit Worthing (3pm).
