BARTON Aerodrome in Salford is to be renamed City Airport Manchester.
But the change of name has been criticised by council leaders who say it will destroy links with the local community.
The aerodrome is owned by Peel Airports and Manchester City Council. They bought it in 2002 through their joint company, Manchester Ship Canal Developments.
The aerodrome is near the Trafford Centre, M60 and the soon-to-be created BBC North development at Salford Quays and is just 20 minutes drive from Bolton.
The name change is aimed at promoting an increase in users, particularly executive business flyers, which could lead to greater investment in the future.
Steve Gill, the airport's managing director, said: "City Airport Manchester will build on the history of Barton Aerodrome and will continue to offer a variety of services."
But John Merry, leader of Salford council, said: "I'm not keen on the new name and I'm concerned that they will sever links with the local community."
