A COUNCIL has agreed to increase its portion of council tax by an above-inflation 3.8 per cent.
The move will mean band D households in the Braintree district will pay an extra £67 council tax in the next financial year - but the final bill will be more in areas where there is also a parish council precept.
Braintree Council agreed the 3.8 per cent increase, which will see its portion of the £1339.80 band D bill rise by £5.20 to £148.59.
The move was generally applauded by all councillors, but Labour members noted there was a council election in May.
Putting forward the proposals, Michael Lager (Con, Witham Chipping Hill and Central) praised the council's use of resources in the past four years, specifically referring to the council housing transfer to Greenfields Housing Association, the new swimming pool at Freeport shopping village, which is due to open in the summer, and the £1 million all-weather sports pitch in Witham.
