LEIGHTON Hospital is undergoing a series of developments with a new cutting edge cancer centre and improvements to car parking.

Over the next few weeks, preparatory work will start for the new Macmillan Cancer Unit in the area adjacent to the Hospital's main entrance.

The cancer unit, which aims to reduce the trauma of being diagnosed and treated whilst simultaenously improving chances of survival, will offer improved patient care, chemotherapy suites, modern outpatient areas for other therapies and specialist services such as fatigue management, counselling, speech therapy and wig fitting.

Due to the building work and the resurfacing of several car parks across the site starting this month, hospital officials are advising of temporary disruption and restriction of car park spaces.

Those affected include public spaces adjacent to the A&E and maternity departments.

No parking will be available on the area adjacent to the Outpatient Department and the car park will be closed to all public vehicles.

To compensate, the Trust will relocate the disabled spaces from this area to the Main Entrance car park.

Diane Chinn, security management specialist, said: "The Trust apologises for the short-term inconvenience which people may experience as we make improvements.

The Trust is encouraging staff to car-share or use public transport while patients and visitors are asked to help reduce congestion by avoiding travelling to the hospital by car.

Local transport company, D&G provides the Crewe FLEXIRIDER' service, serving Leighton Hospital and various immediate surroundings areas.

Alternative travel options include being dropped off at the drop off zones and cycling. Cycle shelters have 24-hour CCTV coverage.
