IF you've not had chance to call your mum lately before watching this quietly fabulous film, you'll be reaching for the phone at the end.

Because this is a genuinely affecting look at the relationship between mother and daughter, the grieving process and the pain of things left unsaid.

The story is as follows: Grandma, who has been dead for four years, suddenly appears to one of two sisters (as is the superstition in this part of Spain - so no worries there!).

Eventually the other sister finds out - but gran is not actually dead after all. Quite why she's been gone and her reasons for returning are the twists in the film and take in some pretty serious subject matter.

What really makes this film is Penelope Cruz. Speaking her native tongue, she has oodles of confidence and is anything but the three-legged cat character handed her in, say, Vanilla Sky. In Volver, she is brash, brave, strong and yet broken.

And, along with some brilliant, funny dialogue, she's one of the main reasons to seek this excellent film out.
