I have been ashamed at the negative and destructive tone of almost all of the letters to the Echo regarding the Pavilion development.

I await a letter from anyone who is objecting to the current plans but who has constructive, rather than destructive comments, together with an estimate of the costs of their alternative proposals (if any) and some idea of where the money is to come from.

When we moved to our present address in Weymouth the town was run down, with many of the hotels closing or only remaining open by taking in benefits claimants.

It is not very long ago that one of the most prestigious listed buildings on the Esplanade was a DHSS hostel.

I would hate to see a return to those days, when no-one seemed to realise that the town could not survive on attracting families for cheap holidays on just a few months of the year.

We really must look forwards rather than back, and must aim to attract people who will benefit the town financially and in other ways. Doing nothing is not an option.

When I was studying economics I was taught that the best way to bring new employment into a town was to make it the kind of place where the managing director's wife wanted to live.
