Kerry Mayo today insisted Albion are not facing another relegation dogfight.

The Seagulls are poised perilously close to the drop zone and in danger of a third survival scrap in four seasons ahead of Saturday's key home contest with Rotherham.

Victory against the Millers, who are bottom of the League One form table, will ease Albion ten points clear of the bottom four if Bournemouth lose at Chesterfield and Cheltenham fail to win at home to Swansea.

On the other hand more dropped points at Withdean will set alarm bells ringing, especially if results are unhelpful in other games, including Leyton Orient's home clash with Port Vale.

Mayo has been involved in a few fights against demotion, including the biggest one of all when their League existence was under threat ten years ago.

But he reckons successive cleansheets against Port Vale and Chesterfield have shown the Seagulls are back on the right lines.

Now he is targeting the Rotherham match, plus forthcoming trips to Leyton Orient and Brentford, as a chance to build on those results.

Asked if the Seagulls were struggling to stay out of the bottom four, Mayo was pretty adamant.

He said: "No, no, no. We are certainly not thinking down those avenues.

"We are going down the road of being positive, keep trying to play the game we want to play and adapt to the game the way we want to adapt.

"We've got a great chance next week with Rotherham at home. Then we've got Brentford away and Leyton Orient, also away.

"It would be nice to get nine points out of those three games, which would be 13 out of the five if you include the last two games."

After that series of games against teams below them in the table, the Seagulls host title-chasing rivals Nottingham Forest and Bristol City on successive Saturdays, with a midweek trip to Gillingham sandwiched in between.

They kick-off March with back-to-back Saturday treks north west, to face Crewe and Blackpool respectively.

The sort of run they enjoyed in the autumn will see them comfortably away from danger.

That sequence of away games at Huddersfield, Scunthorpe and Bradford is remembered for a flurry of goals.

But it was the defensive security which really persuaded the Seagulls they could go to such places and win. Mayo sees signs of that again. He said: "For me the biggest boost is two cleansheets in a row in the League.

"It seems there is a lot more confidence on the pitch.

"From my point of view it seems players are playing with confidence and we can only go on to better things from there."

Hibernian have signed York striker Clayton Donaldson on a pre-contract agreement.

The former Hull frontman, who has scored 18 goals in the Nationwide Conference this season, including one in the 5-0 demolition of Crawley, will move to Easter Road at the end of the season.

York recently refused sixfigure bids from Scunthorpe, Accrington and Peterborough for Donaldson.
