Detectives investigating the death of a man near an Oxford park and ride have widened their hunt nationally to discover his identity.

Mystery still surrounds the man, who died in apparently bizarre circumstances on Tuesday, at the Seacourt Park and Ride, off Botley Road. The man was not carrying any identification and did not match anyone in Oxford reported missing.

Police released an efit yesterday. So far officers have received calls from nine people in Oxfordshire with information, but those leads have proved false.

Thames Valley Police spokeswoman Victoria Bartlett said: "We were very grateful for the response we received.

"We have checked out all the leads, but none have led to the man's identification.

"We haven't completed all of our inquiries locally. However, we are spreading our inquiries out nationally.

"We are using the national press and using the National Missing Person's Database."

Miss Bartlett said the man's fingerprints, DNA and dental records were also being compared with national databases. Det Insp Kevin Elkins, investigating the death, said: "We are continuing to try and establish who this man was and are carrying out a number of inquiries."

The man was white, slim and around 5ft 11ins. He was in his early to mid twenties and had brown to auburn short hair and light coloured eyes.

As reported in the Oxford Mail police are investigating if his death was an elaborate suicide involving a knife, a drainpipe and a length of rope.

The body was found near an electricity pylon, on ground near the park and ride, just after 9am on Tuesday.

Anyone who knows who the man is should call Det Insp Elkins on 08458 505505 or leave an anonymous message with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
