BUDDING athletes from Colfox School have qualified for the English Schools' Cross-Country finals in Bolton tomorrow.

The super six' grabbed the chance to compete against the best teenagers in the country after finishing second in the South West regional round at Millfield School.

Lucy Tweed, Laura Bowen-Ashwin, Abbie Letherby, Sarah Fullegar, Lauren Podger and Megan Tuck ran their socks off to book their place behind Penair and ahead of the prestigious Somerset hosts.

"It was an amazing day," said their coach Andy David.

"The team was second overall which is certainly the best we have achieved regionally."

He added: "The standard was amazingly high. I was quite nervous about the race what with Millfield, Penair and other schools like Ivybridge, who are massive, in there.

"But to finish second ahead of Millfield was brilliant. If you finish in front of Millfield you know you are doing something right."

Ninety-six runners from 16 schools took part in the regional event.

And with the South West boasting some of the country's leading cross-country talent the girls can be confident of a good showing in Lancashire.

David said: "The girls ran brilliantly as a team and were so excited when they heard the results as they delayed the announcement for ages.

"They have proved for the last three years that they are among the top runners in the country.

"This result has proved to us that we can compete with the best but whatever happens on the day we will enjoy the experience."
