CHILDREN at a school in central Middlesbrough have impressed education watchdogs with the way they enjoy learning and looking after each other.

Ofsted inspectors described the 220-pupil Newport Primary School as a good school, with many outstanding features, and "an excellent example of a happy, respectful, multi-cultural community."

In her letter to pupils, lead inspector Janet Bennett, said: "You were right - your school is good, and there are lots of fantastic things happening there that don't always happen in other schools."

She added: "You are right to be proud of yourselves. Carry on looking after each other and enjoy your learning."

Mrs Bennett said she and the inspectors were particularly impressed by pupils' excellent behaviour, good lesson planning by teachers, the attention given to pupils' welfare and the responsible, caring attitude of the children.

Pupils' personal development and moral, social and cultural development were said to be outstanding.

Headteacher Chris Quinn said: "We are proud of the report, which shows how far our school has come over the past ten years and how it is still going very much in the right direction."
