A PAIR of Dudley sporting superstars led the way as unsung heroes were honoured in Dudley Council's Civic Awards.

Lower Gornal-based Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Ryan Bradley picked up the Duncan Edwards award for sport.

Ryan won bronze as part of the men's artistic gymnastics team at last year's Melbourne games.

He hopes to qualify for next year's Olympics by taking part in this year's World Championships.

Runner-up was Rugby Union star Shaun Perry, originally from Lye, who now plays for Bristol and was capped by England for the first time last year. He started his career at Dudley and Kingswinford Rugby Club.

Anthony Tatford, a teacher at Pedmore College and Community School, scooped the Thomas Attwood prize for education after working at the school for 35 years.

Trudy Parker, a retired Dudley resident, finished runner-up.

Founder and chair of the Dudley Stroke Association Club, Anne Adams, of Woodsetton, won the Frank Foley community spirit award for her 25 years of dedication to the group as a volunteer. Anne organises holidays, day trips and activities.

Chris Fonteyn, who worked with a host of associations including Stourbridge Historical Society, finished in second place.

The Cedric Hardwicke award for art was scooped by Ivan Brydges, Halesowen-based founder member of voluntary theatre group Solar Service.

The group co-ordinates backstage, lighting and technical support for shows by groups including Brierley Hill Operatic Society.

Runner-up was Lyn Williams, former chair of Dudley Arts Council, who was recognised for promoting art in Dudley.

The winners and runners-up were given their prizes at a glitzy council ceremony on Tuesday March 20 after more than 60 nominations were received.

The Mayor of Dudley, Councillor John Woodall, said: "We have received a wonderful collection of nominations this year and although it was so difficult to choose a winner, it's been a wonderful experience and has given me a fascinating insight into the achievements of local people.

"I would like to congratulate all of the winners and runners-up for achieving what is above and beyond what is expected of them.

"Their dedication to their field of work is exemplary."
