SAM Allardyce's suggestion that Wanderers have a score to settle with Wigan Athletic tomorrow is not based solely on his own experience of these derby duels.

The Latics made more than just a nuisance of themselves in their debut Premiership season, winning the first encounter at the JJB and coming from behind to claim a 1-1 draw at the Reebok. In between, for good measure, they beat them on the way to the Carling Cup Final.

But history shows that Wigan have had the better of the results since the teams met competitively for the first time at Springfield Park on Boxing Day, 1983.

Wanderers won that first encounter, 1-0 in the old Third Division, but the Latics gained revenge later in the season with a 1-0 win at Burnden Park.

And since then they have edged ahead in the 23-match series, which currently stands at 10 wins to Wigan, eight to Wanderers with five matches drawn.
