I would like to offer some praise where it is due for our beleaguered National Health Service.

My husband and myself were on holiday in Dorset when he became unwell. We came back early and contacted the respiratory team of nurses at Brighton General Hospital.

After speaking to him, they advised him that a nurse would call out to see him.

A nurse, Mark, arrived at around 7.15pm and proceeded to examine my husband and diagnosed him. He then telephoned the out-of-hours doctor service, who advised him that a doctor would call him.

Within ten minutes, the doctor, Dr Ahmed, called and Mark told him his diagnosis and what he would like prescribed for my husband. The doctor faxed the prescription to our local chemist at the Seven Dials.

As I am a not driver, the chemist arranged for a taxi to bring the prescription direct to us that evening in order that my husband could start the medication right away.

I would mention that Mark should have finished at 8pm but stayed on until all the details had been ironed out.

I would like to let people know that the system does work and that the people attending to our needs are kind and helpful, most of the time.
