Ardley United boss Dan Still says their Oxfordshire Senior Cup victory over Oxford United on Wednesday will boost their push for a top-three finish in the Sport Italia Hellenic League Premier Division, writes Kieren Bushnell.

Ardley came back from 2-0 down to stun Oxford with a 3-2 victory, and Still was quick to praise his side.

He said: "We didn't really know what side we were likely to be facing, but we know that all players at professional clubs have a decent pedigree.

"It was a fantastic result for us. When you're playing against the likes of Andy Burgess, deemed to be one of the best midfield players in the Nationwide Conference, it made the victory all the sweeter."

Leading 2-0 through two Billy Beechers goals inside the first 25 minutes, Oxford's reserves were then embarrassed by the hard-working Ardley outfit.

They netted through Phil Martin after half an hour, Steve Garbutt on 62 minutes and Luke Holden in the fourth minute of injury time.

When Ardley went 2-0 down, Still admitted he feared the worst.

"I felt that their first goal came against the run of play," he said. "But I must admit, I thought that we could capitulate, because we looked very nervous.

"A poor decision from Adam Richmond let Oxford in for their second goal, but scoring just before half-time was a big boost and gave us a lot of confidence.

"The mood changed, and at half-time, we knew that if we could stay in touch, we could win it - and we proved that.

"Our set-plays for excellent, and I must pay tribute to Holden, who took the winner extremely well."

Ardley had missed a chance to return to the top of the table on Saturday when losing 1-0 at home to Shrivenham.

The hosts lost Chris Hill and Adam Richmond to injuries at the start of the second half, and were caught by a sucker punch when they failed to clear a corner and Shrivenham's Mark Peters scored from close range.

Holden and Tom Green missed chances to level, but it wasn't to be their day.

The big games keep coming for Ardley, and tomorrow they host promotion-chasing Witney United.

Garbutt suffered a nasty knee injury in midweek and is definitely out, as is striker Hill (ankle ligaments).

Still added: "Witney are a big club in Hellenic terms. They have applied for promotion and they are a club with a good history, big ambitions and very good players.

"It means that we face another big test, but one I'm confident we can overcome."

Witney's selection worries are beginning to ease.

Nando Perna is set to return from injury, while Christian Perkins has recovered from a hamstring prob- lem.

However, long-term injury victims Robbie Wyatt and Mark Odom are still out, while Mark McMeeking is unavailable.
