This mundane but revealing "aerial" view of the top of Cavendish Street in the 1950s has been supplied by Ms Valerie Stork of Sutton-in-Craven, whose father was a member of the Keighley and District Photographic Association.
It was taken from an upper window of the Keighley Mechanics' Institute, obviously on a weekday as people are coming out of the public library.
The traffic is noteworthy for its comparative scarcity, whilst the bus-stop, whose corrugated-roofed shelter is seen at the bottom right, would now be on an unsatisfactory site.
The traffic-lights and crossings are still in the pre-war style, and every single pedestrian is wearing a substantial overcoat or raincoat.
At the top left, the former Children's Library extension, begun in 1959, has yet to appear.
Notice the once-common motor-bike and sidecar following the lorry.
