CAMPAIGNERS for good architecture have said that some of Exeter's best-known buildings are blots on the landscape.

Hazel Harvey, vice-chairman of the Civic Society, which presses for well-designed buildings in the city, spoke of several buildings that she thinks are eyesores.

Among the buildings criticised by Mrs Harvey is Broadwalk House in Southernhay West, a red brick four-storey office block above an underground car park.

She said: "If it was meant to match the Georgian Terraces that were bombed, they have got it wrong. If they hadn't raised it to put the car park in, it could have continued the line and fitted in."

Mrs Harvey also said the Vue Cinema in Cheeke Street was among the least attractive buildings in the city.

She said: "The whole building is a mish-mash, with a post office, car park and the Vue Cinema.

"I don't like the glass windows as I think they must dazzle bus drivers travelling to the bus station from Heavitree.

"There is too much glass facing into the sunlight and each way you look, there are railings or orange bricks and no symmetry."
