I READ that the council wants to sell off a chunk of Victoria Park, along with the Victorian lodge because it serves no purpose', Fight for park lodge' (Star March 1). What precise purpose may I ask does the needle serve?

I believe this cost around £350,000 to erect, and while I support the installation of works of art to make places great (and not just education, health and unemployment statistics etc).

I also believe heritage plays a big role in this too. And so I believe that places of interest, such as the lodge and the park itself, should be retained as places of interest, and hold as much artistic value, and therefore 'purpose' as the needle.
