I read the article in your September 14 edition giving details of the special needs shake up in Sutton and question if the proposals compare favourably with what was provided by the then Tory local authority at Hallmead in the 70s.
The diversity of activities provided then consisted of printing, metalwork, woodwork, handicrafts, cookery and social activities such as drama.
It was a very busy and happy place in which parents and carers were involved including fundraising for extras and the building was used for social occasions in the evenings. How different from the run down day centre it is today.
I would like to remind all councillors before they rubber stamp these new proposals of the Government White Paper (2001) Valuing People, which stresses the importance of consultation and of choice.
I wonder how much choice the clients of Hallmead will be given especially where long-term friendship exists.
I am an advocate for one of the Hallmead clients and I feel the need to voice my views.
