Freshly grown organic vegetables and fruit could soon be available at a fraction of the supermarket price for Milford Haven residents.

The Acorns Community Centre on the Mount Estate has obtained funding to create an organic vegetable garden as a community and social enterprise project in Hubberston.

The project is still in the early stages and work is expected to start within the next few months once enough volunteers have been found.

Ideas such as cookery classes and healthy eating lessons are already being discussed for when the project is in full swing.

Operations manager at the centre, Megan Bond, said: "It's in the pipeline and we have just got to finish sorting out a few things but we are hoping it will be up and running by the summer."

It is hoped all Milford residents will get involved in the project and not just those living on the Mount Estate.

Megan is hoping volunteers with agriculture experience will come forward as the land is quite barren and hasn't been used in years.

"We really need someone with the right expertise to help us get this project off the ground," she added.

It hasn't been decided what type of vegetables will be grown on the land yet or how they will be sold back to the community but potatoes will be one of the first crops grown for a trial period.

Manager of the centre, Joyce Walters, said: "Because of the unemployment up here the youngsters tend to go for ready meals and we had this idea to use some of the vegetables we grow to show them how you can live on fresh vegetables for a week, which is much cheaper and healthier."

It is hoped the lessons will get underway next year after the vegetables are being grown successfully.

"It is exciting," said Joyce, adding: "It would be nice if people help out and take an interest in what's going on."

Anyone interested in volunteering for a few hours or a few days should contact Joyce, Megan or Kathy Gray at the centre on 01646 692029.
