Sir, With local elections due in May, the Government and Opposition parties are busy setting out their green credentials.

The main thrust this time seems to be the reduction in carbon emissions from the internal combustion engine, which the Liberal Democrats have been advocating for a long time and the others are now trying to muscle in on.

Yet we see that the Liberal Democrat Vale district and Abingdon town councils are trying their best to buck the trend to less pollution by creating conditions leading to long traffic jams in the town, with stop-start exhaust carbon emissions, and by providing umpteen dedicated parking spaces for their own employees while trying to encourage everyone else to use public transport, bike or walk.
