I would like to express my revulsion at the decision by the children and young people's overview and scrutiny committee (CYPOSC) to send back the decision of the children, families and schools (CFS) committee on the schools admissions proposals (The Argus, February 20).

Watching from the public gallery, I was reminded of why ordinary people can hold local politicians in such contempt.

Clearly, Tory councillors and Labour's Kevin Allen are now keen to set aside any procedural niceties and get down to the bare-knuckle fight we know as the upcoming local election. They want to protect their local patch and their own electoral skins.

They seem to have no recollection that they voted in principle for this decision at CFS on November 6, 2006, and no interest in acting for the city as a whole.

Despite the best efforts of the chair, some councillors persistently acted outside the remit of the CYPOSC and simply rehashed the debate which had already been had fully at the CFS.

No new information was shared and they refused to discuss whether the original decision was procedurally incorrect.

Councillor Allen even had the audacity to propose a vote of no confidence in the chair at the beginning of the meeting.

This seemed to be an attempt to scupper the whole meeting and delay a decision even further.
