Welling Utd 1 v 0 Sutton Utd

Nationwide Conference South

DANNY Kedwell scored his sixth league goal of the season to guide Welling to victory and ninth spot in the Nationwide Conference South.

Equally important was the second clean sheet in succession thanks in part to the arrival of defender Ben Lewis from St Albans.

Adrian Pennock said: "We needed someone strong in the air and a leader on the pitch.

"With Ben we get this and he did well."

However the first half of match belonged to Sutton and they almost scored in the fifth minute when Ross Gaynor fired wide.

A minute later, Andy Turner was a relieved man when Charlie Ide's header rebounded off the crossbar.

New-boy Lewis had Welling's first chance of the afternoon but he put Jamie Day's corner wide.

Sutton hit the crossbar again from Peter Fear's well-struck free-kick.

Just before half time Matt Bodkin could have given Welling an undeserved lead but he could only find the side netting.

Welling had a goal wiped out after the linesman ruled Kedwell offside.

The breakthrough came a minute into the second half when Ellis Green's cross was headed home from close range by Kedwell.
