I note from the News Shopper (Curbing cuts but charges to go ahead) that Lewisham Labour Mayor Steve Bullock plans to press ahead with charging residents on council estates £18 a time for the removal of bulky rubbish.
Mayor Bullock says this will bring those residents in line with the rest of the borough, which is undoubtedly true.
Surely though, it's high time those residents were brought in line with the rest of the borough by having their recycling collected from their doorsteps?
Other boroughs, like LibDem-run Islington, manage it without problems.
I have been told by the deputy mayor that there are "no plans" to introduce door-to-door recycling for estate residents. This simply isn't good enough.
Council tenants pay their council tax like everyone else. If the mayor's going to charge them to have their lumber collected like everyone else, he should be making sure they can have their recycling collected door-to-door like everyone else.
