I AM writing in response to Reggie Trestrail's letter in the Packet dated October 18 regarding his view that Councillor Mark Kaczmarek's opinion on the South Crofty mine is not valid because he spent most of his time on the surface.

I would like to say that I have known Mark for over 20 years, and it wasn't long ago that while at work as a miner underground he was nearly decapitated by a rock fall. To an outsider such as myself, the fact that Mark was a trades union representative, as well as a miner, persuades me that he would have a far more balanced view of the running of the mine than if he was simply a miner. He was in a position to see the bigger picture, ranging from the perspective of the boardroom to that of the man underground.
