MINCHINHAMPTON Primary School received a glowing Ofsted report after inspectors spent two days assessing staff and pupils.

The school was rated good overall and standards were said to be 'consistently above average.

Pupils are well behaved and demonstrate positive attitudes toward the school and their work, stated the report.

"This is a good school which has many strengths and few weaknesses," said Ofsted inspector Tom Simpson.

"The headteacher and senior staff continually strive to raise standards and the curriculum provided is rich and varied.

"Pupils are very well known to staff and consequently their personal development is good.

"They are kind to one another at play and supportive in lessons, and empathise well with those less fortunate than themselves."

Headteacher Rod Harris said the school's biggest achievement has been teaching children to take responsibility for their own learning.

"Their work ethic is excellent," he said.

"If they are asked to do something they get on and do it - they take the initiative.

"We don't just teach them facts and figures, they learn how to find these things out which prepares them for the real world."

Last year inspectors picked up on weaknesses in the writing skills of boys in Year 6 but it was noted that standards have now improved.

Mr Harris said these particular pupils were encouraged to plan and redraft their writing more.

"Girls are always more ahead than girls at writing but we've really focused on this issue," he said.

""Boys tend to just shove it down but now they think more about what they are producing."
