AN RAF corporal and his two children died after inhaling smoke in a house fire, an inquest hearing heard today.

Corporal Andy Greenough, 37, from Cwmtillery, his son Evan, five, and two-year-old daughter, Nia, died in the blaze on the RAF base of Akrotiri, Cyprus.

During the opening of an inquest into their deaths in Newport, Gwent coroner's officer Ken Le Prevost, confirmed that they died in the fire on March 17.

They were formally identified by a relative yesterday.

"A post-mortem examination was carried out in Cyprus and in each case the cause of death was given as inhalation of fire fumes," he said.

In a report read at the hearing, RAF wing commander John Conway said that the fire occurred at about 9.20pm in Anne's Close.

An investigation into the blaze was launched but the cause is not yet known.

Gwent Coroner David Bowen said: "This is particularly tragic because it involved two small infants and their father."

Funeral services for Corporal Greenough and his two children are due to be held tomorrow.
