AN unkempt area of wasteland in Cookhill could be transformed into a tranquil memorial garden.

The Cookhill Village Hall committee wants to carry out work on a small area of land as a permanent memorial to former village resident May Taylor, who died of cancer several years ago.

When Mrs Taylor's husband was chairman of the village hall committee, she had spent many years tirelessly working to ensure the upkeep of the hall on Evesham Road, which underwent a massive renovation two-and-a-half years ago.

The planned garden area is off the car park attached to the village hall, has beautiful views of countryside and is near the village church but is currently in a poor state.

Committee chairman Eileen Payne said: "We thought it was about time we cleaned up this messy land and did something to remember May Taylor by, who worked so hard for the village hall.

"As we're already spending a lot of money on the hall and the car park, we're applying to various organisations to see if they can help us with this project.

"We've already applied to the Astwood Bank Carnival Committee which has agreed to give us a small grant and we've asked Cookhill Parish Council if it could buy a park bench.

"It's not a huge piece of land but has beautiful views. We think it would be a lovely spot for people to spend some quiet time and a wonderful way of commemorating all the work May did."

The committee will hold its annual meeting on April 24 and is seeking new members.
