HEART failure patients and their carers are discovering the benefits of tai chi thanks to a pilot project by Darlington Primary Care Trust.
Patients spend Monday mornings at Eastbourne Sports Complex learning the ancient Chinese meditation technique.
Instructor Don Marks said: "Tai chi can help us regain the sense of balance that we lose as we get older. Chi is energy and this is about using it correctly. Within just a few weeks, people start to feel a lot better."
The classes are organised with the help of Darlington Borough Council, and the project is sponsored by Darlington Coronary Support Group and The Friends of Darlington Hospital voluntary service, who provide transport.
Heart failure nurse Jill Drinkall, who developed the project, said: "Exercise poses a special challenge for people with heart failure and many are isolated in their homes.
"Now, thanks to this project, we can bring people together. It has been really well received."
Anyone interested in taking part can telephone Ms Drinkall on 01325-364271.
