Paul Bush, deputy chief executive of EventScotland and chef de mission of the 29-medal Scottish Commonwealth Games team last year, is the new chairman of the East of Scotland Institute of Sport.
The honorary post, based at Heriot-Watt University's Riccarton campus, supports 119 athletes in 15 sports.
"I'm delighted to be back involved in elite sport, and I'm looking forward to adding any support and experience I can offer to the role," said Bush, who succeeds Edinburgh councillor Ricky Henderson.
Bush was formerly chief executive of Scottish Swimming, deputy head of developing youth sport at Sport England, and assistant director of the ASA. The six area institutes are a stepping stone to the Scottish Institute of Sport.
Graeme Dyce, winner of this year's Australian Open tennis junior doubles title, and Kate Cullen, first Scotswoman to win a Commonwealth cycling medal in Melbourne last year, are ESIS athletes.
