The MPs' vote for an elected House of Lords is good - as far as it goes. But reform of the upper chamber is only one of the pressing constitutional issues facing us.

The dispute over the role of the Attorney General in the "cash for honours" scandal has graphically illustrated - once again - the need for a proper separation of powers in Britain. The recent elections in Northern Ireland under proportional representation illustrate the fundamental anomaly of having different voting systems running side-by-side in one country.

The recently revived West Lothian question points to the need to consider a properly federal solution to the "many parliaments" issue. What is now needed is a proper Speaker's conference to thrash out all these issues in a systematic and satisfactory manner. Piecemeal reform is likely just to store up further problems.

p A 30 per cent rise in vehicle crime, coupled with a recent wave of arson attacks, means that law and order remains a key issue in Stanwell. I am second-to-none in my admiration for the work of the local constabulary, but we cannot be complacent.

What would help enormously is a proper police station on the estate. This would mean that officers do not have to rush out from Staines or wherever when their services are needed. Perhaps, as local residents, we can ask the political hopefuls now on our doorsteps if they will commit to this.

In addition, of course there is the whole agenda of better youth facilities and addiction care to be addressed. Work perhaps for Stanwell New Start?
