A demonstration is due to take place outside Bradford City Hall on Saturday by Zimbabweans in protest about the worsening conditions in their home country under President Robert Mugabe's rule.

Members of Bradford's Cadafretz branch, a Zimbabwean asylum seekers' organisation, intend to gather to make a stand against the deportation of their countrymen from the UK.

Campaigner Wonder Zulu, 33, of Whetley Lane, Bradford, came to Bradford in February 2002. He said: "We don't want our people to be sent home because people are getting beaten up every day in Zimbabwe.

"We want Bradford Council and the Home Office to hear our plea that we are at risk back in Africa. You're not even allowed to demonstrate over there. Someone in Africa or in the international community needs to speak up and maybe things can change."

Mr Zulu said members of the MDC party - President Mugabe's political opposition - were expected to join Cadafretz for the protest which he estimated could involve up to 150 people.
