1871: November 17 - Gun Cotton exploded in Entwistle tunnel killing one man and injuring another.

1871: December 30 - Man killed by stone throwing at a political meeting in Bolton Temperance Hall.

1872: January 31 - Explosion of fire-damp at Trencherbone Colliery, Little Lever. One killed.

1872: March 22 - Opening of All Saints church at Bolton.

1872: May 2 - Inquiry opened, on orders of Home Secretary, into Dilke Riots in Bolton.

1872: April 1 - The Co-operative Movement held a Congress in Bolton.

1872: May 18 - George Hunt's shop in Chequerbent Lane blown apart by gunpowder. Mrs Hunt died.

1872: September 25 - Bolton celebrated its very first half-day closing.

1873: June 5 - The original Bolton Town Hall was opened by HRH Prince Edward of Wales. The first recital of the great organ in the Albert Hall was on October 21, 1874.

1874: January 6 - Home Rule for Ireland meeting held in Temperance Hall, Bolton.
