The Bradford and District Children's Charity Circle (BDCCC) is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

The charity provides financial assistance and gives items such as cots, bedding and clothing to families in need in the Bradford district as well as being involved in international projects such as funding a children's hospital ward in Pusan, Korea.

BDCCC secretary Mary Seal said: "The catalyst for the Charity Circle was the Hungarian uprising in 1957.

"At the time there was a nationwide appeal to raise money for Hungarian refugees. Margaret Berwick along with six other women formed the original committee and suggested that as they had been so successful raising money for that appeal, they could do a similar thing for the needy children of Bradford."

The circle is now looking for new volunteers to carry on its work.

Mrs Seal said: "None of us are getting any younger, so if there are any women out there who feel they could lend a hand, we'd love to hear from them.

"We've certainly had a lot of fun and would like to thank all the people who have so generously supported us over the years. It would be nice to think that there are some willing volunteers to take the essential work into the next half century."
