FAMILIES near the site of a proposed multi-million pound tourist scheme have expressed concern at the plan.

Developers want to create a four-star hotel and conference centre, an 18-hole golf course and a holiday village on a 235-acre former Army camp near Barnard Castle.

But those living around Humbleton Army camp, three miles east of Barnard Castle along the A67, said it would cause traffic problems and infringe on their space.

Malcolm Watts lives with his wife, Marianne, in the house she was born in, at the entrance to the proposed to development.

He said: "When the first plans came out, it was going to be a very small project, with just a few chalets. Now every time something comes out about the newest plan, it seems to get bigger. We are worried about the volume of traffic on that road, which is a blackspot.

"We are also worried about pollution, not just from cars, but from litter and the noise."

Ruth Thompson said: "That stretch of road is shockingly dangerous."

The developers said it could create 400 jobs.

Mr Watts said: "There will be jobs created, but those people are going to need to get to work, so that is more traffic.

"They are saying how good it will be for Teesdale, but it seems as though there will be cafes, restaurants and shops within the site, so they are not going to spend their money in Barnard Castle or anywhere else."

Mrs Thompson said: "I am not anti-progress, I do not think the site should be left to rack and ruin, but I think for the area, and the scale that it is going to be, I do not think it is appropriate."

Marc Willis, the project manager, said it would attract tourists and encourage the establishment of businesses. He said the scheme would be sensitive to the environment and enhance the beauty of the area.

Developers said the site could open by 2010 if approved. The plans will be on show from 10am to 4pm today in Witham Hall, Barnard Castle.
