TAUNTON'S Musgrove Park Hospital accident and emergency department is dealing with 98.8% of patients within four hours - despite an increase in people requiring treatment.
The figure is above the national target of 98% of patients to be seen, treated and either admitted or discharged within four hours.
Over 12,000 people attended Musgrove Park's A and E between October and December 2006.
Some 3,000 of those needed to be admitted to the hospital - an increase of more than 400 over the same period last year.
Consultant in emergency medicine Paul Baines said: "These figures show the accident and emergency department at Musgrove is continuing to do an excellent job, even though the demand keeps on increasing.
"To see, treat and either admit or discharge almost 99% of our patients within four hours is a fantastic achievement - especially when you consider the increase in the number of patients who are ill enough to require admission."
