AROUND 50 residents had to be evacuated from their homes after a fire broke out in a disused builder's yard.

The blaze began in Sewell Road, Abbey Wood, and saw four fire engines and around 20 firefighters attend.

Two propane gas cylinders were involved in the incident, which had to be cooled to avoid the risk of an explosion.

Evacuated residents were taken to a nearby community centre while the area was made safe.

The fire, which started at 4.30pm on Thursday, was out within two hours and its cause is now under investigation.
