Two of Oxford's major roads are to close shortly due to the imminent risk of flooding.

The junction of Abingdon Road and Kennington Road will be shut at 8am and Botley Road will shut at 9am.

Oxfordshire County Council and Thames Valley Police said the decision had been made to prepare for possible flooding and warned people travelling into Oxford to find an alternative route, or to avoid going into the city.

To help residents who live in the affected areas, supplies of sand and sand bags are being made available.

They are available at the PC World car park for the Botley Road area and at Redbridge park-and-ride for Abingdon Road residents.

The emergency services are warning that there is also likely to be flooding in Osney Mead, Grandpont, South Hinksey and Kennington.

Fire crews and police have been visiting homes in the affected areas to issue advice and identify residents who are vulnerable and may need extra help.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Dave Etheridge said: "The past 48 hours have been a very testing time for all the emergency services in Oxfordshire and we have worked as one team to ensure that residents remain safe."
