MINI is looking at subsidised insurance schemes to help make its cars more viable for young drivers.

Nothing is yet in place, but senior figures at Mini UK have been pushing for discounted insurance schemes to entice those drivers for whom insurance is most expensive.

Other manufacturers do offer schemes, normally for those aged 21-25 or in rare cases 18+.

Mini sees the potential move as a way to bolster its sales to buyers who have been forced elsewhere by high insurance premiums.

In other news, the UK-based company will also give its cars "distinctly separate identities" after discovering too much crossover in the way they are seen.

The three-door hatchback is to be repositioned as a youthful, carefree and funky premium supermini, more akin to its appeal.

At the other end of the scale, the new Clubman will take the position of the grown-up, mature and capable option in the range.
