THE Skoda Fabia has been a popular car over its life – which now spans more than 15 years – and the good news is that the 2015 model is better than ever.

It seems almost inconceivable now that Skoda was once the butt of many a school playground joke, because, since VW took it under its wing, it has had one of the most remarkable transformations of reputation you are ever likely to see.

The latest Fabia continues that; it’s excellent.

The whole feeling of the car to drive is one of lightness and liveliness – I tested the 1.2 TSI petrol and it’s keen, thrummy and just perfect for the car – you can also spec the 1.0, three-cylinder out of the Citigo and a 1.4 diesel, which puffs out as little as 88g/km and manages a combined 83 to the gallon.

But back to the 1.2 – coupled to a lovely light gearbox and steering, it makes the new Fabia fun and a joy to drive, with handling to match its keenness. It’s still pretty efficient, at 60 to the gallon – I managed 50-odd in the real world – and 110g/km of CO2.

Looks-wise, the new Fabia continues Skoda’s latest vibe of sharp lines and looks good for it – it looks more like a sporty hatch than ever and less quirky than before.

Whether that’s a good thing or not is down to what floats your boat, but I like it.

Inside, things are even better.

Skoda’s interiors are getting closer and closer to the quality of VW and that is a very good thing indeed.

The SE model that I tested had the Bolero infotainment system fitted as a standard feature. It’s the latest system that you’ll find in the Fabia’s Volkswagen cousins and it’s excellent.

As we still expect from Skoda, specs are good – with standard kit including stop-start, which works seamlessly, digital radio, USB, electric front windows and more.

It’s a fairly simple range, with the SE that I drove in the middle and adding smart alloys, leather steering wheel and other trim, parking sensors and the Bolero system, which mirrors your smartphone, among its features.

Things are topped off with the SE L, which gets bigger alloys, a multi-function steering wheel, keyless start and cruise control.

There is little to disappoint with the new Fabia, it’s a pleasure to drive, is efficient, feels more premium inside than ever and looks great.

Prices range from £10,545 to £17,985.
