Coates kicks to top of the chart

Derek Coates booted his way to the top of the National 3 South point-scoring list list when he scored 18 in Westcombe Park's 38-13 win over Tabard at Goddington Dene on Sunday.

Combe were soon off the mark when Ben Smith scored a try after just four minutes and Coates duly converted.

Five minutes later it was 14-0 after Ben Thomas scored the first of his two tries after a punt ahead, chase and touchdown, with Coates added the extra two points.

Tabard pulled three back with a penalty before Deal Sole scored a magnificent try involving five pairs of hands.

Coates missed with the conversion but he then kicked two penalties to put Park 25-3 ahead at the interval.

Another Coates penalty made it 28-3 before Tabard came back into the game with two tries of their own from Brendan Higgins and Ben James one converted to reduce the deficit to 28-13.

But with three minutes of normal time remaining, Coates kicked his fourth penalty before Thomas scored his second try in the closing moments.

Coates was again on target with the conversion to clinch a 38-13 victory.

This Saurday, Westcome Park make the long trip to Redruth, in Cornwall.
