A three-year-old boy from Carterton is cycling 100 miles throughout March to raise funds for cancer patients.

Freddie started the challenge after his grandfather, Peter, also a Carterton resident, was diagnosed with mouth cancer last November.

Following extensive treatment, including surgery at Oxford's Churchill Hospital, Freddie has been determined to help.

Freddie’s Mum Kathryn Clayton said: "Every day Freddie wanted to know when his Grampy was coming home to play and be silly with him - and we told him that the doctors at the hospital were busy getting him better.

“When his Grampy came home from hospital Freddie wanted to head straight to check to him. We explained that he would look a bit different, but he’s taken everything in his stride and was quickly asking Grampy to play superheroes and hide and seek.

"Freddie asks every day if Grampy is getting better, so we thought a challenge may help him to feel like he’s doing something to help.

"My dad has just completed a six-week course of radiotherapy and it’s tough, but he’s keeping his sense of humour, and Freddie always makes him smile.

“Despite his age, Freddie recently started riding his bike without stabilisers, and he’s getting really good. So he decided that bike riding would be a great challenge."

Freddie has been cycling daily during March in an effort to reach his 100-mile goal.

He has cycled in a variety of costumes including Paddington bear and the Hulk.

His dedication has seen him cover 89.6 miles so far, raising £2,600 in the process.

The funds will be directed to Oxford Hospitals Charity, which has been caring for Peter - specifically the intensive care unit, haematology team and radiology departments.

Lorna Eaton, part of the supporter care team at Oxford Hospitals Charity said; “What a superstar Freddie is.

"He clearly loves his Grampy very much and is doing such an amazing challenge to fundraise for the charity that looks after his Grampy.

"We wish him every success with his fundraising and look forward to receiving updates."

On bank holiday Monday Freddie will be cycling around the edge of the pitch at Oxford United, where he'll also receive an Oxford United Shirt.

His grandfather is an Oxford United supporter and Freddie's family are hopeful that Peter will be well enough to attend at least for the first half.

Kathryn Clayton has asked for residents to give Freddie a cheer if they see him cycling around and shared her hope of more people sponsoring Freddie's initiative.
